GLP-1 Injection Sites

Where you inject matters for comfort and absorption. Here's the complete guide to choosing and rotating injection sites for semaglutide and tirzepatide.

Approved Injection Sites

GLP-1 medications are subcutaneous injections—they go into the fatty tissue just under the skin. Three areas are approved:

ABDOMEN

The most popular choice. Use the area at least 2 inches (5 cm) away from your belly button.

Pros: Easy access, typically more fat tissue, least painful for most people

THIGH

Front or outer thigh, in the middle third between knee and hip.

Pros: Easy to reach, good for rotation, convenient when sitting

UPPER ARM

Back of upper arm, between shoulder and elbow.

Pros: Out of sight, works well for some. May need assistance.

Why Site Rotation Matters

Injecting in the same exact spot repeatedly can cause:

  • Lipodystrophy: Changes in fat tissue—lumps or dips at injection sites
  • Reduced absorption: Scar tissue can affect how medication is absorbed
  • Increased discomfort: Overused areas become more sensitive

ROTATION STRATEGY

Move at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) from your previous injection site. Consider a clockwise pattern: right abdomen > left abdomen > right thigh > left thigh > repeat. Or simply alternate between two main areas.

Which Site Works Best?

Absorption is equivalent across all three sites, so choose based on comfort and convenience:

Choose abdomen if: You want the easiest access, typically lowest discomfort, and most tissue to work with. Most users prefer this site.

Choose thigh if: You prefer not to lift clothing, want to inject while sitting, or need another option for rotation.

Choose arm if: You have someone to help, prefer it out of sight, or find it most comfortable for your body type.

Areas to Avoid

  • Within 2 inches of the belly button
  • Areas with bruises, cuts, or skin irritation
  • Scar tissue
  • Stretch marks (reduced absorption possible)
  • Areas with prominent veins
  • The same exact spot as previous weeks

Tips for Lagos Users

A few practical considerations for our climate:

  • Sweat: Make sure the injection site is clean and dry. Wipe with alcohol and let it dry completely.
  • Clothing: Abdomen works well when you need to inject discreetly without fully undressing.
  • Travel: If moving around Lagos, thigh injections work well when you need to inject in transit (car, office bathroom).
