How to Inject Semaglutide
Whether you're using brand-name Ozempic/Wegovy or compounded semaglutide, the injection technique is the same. Here's your complete guide.
Preparation Checklist
Before your first injection, ensure you have:
- Semaglutide (vial or pre-filled pen)
- Insulin syringes (if using vials) - 30 or 31 gauge, 1/2 inch
- Alcohol wipes
- Sharps disposal container
- Clean, flat surface to work on
PRO TIP
Remove medication from refrigerator 15-30 minutes before injection. Room temperature medication causes less discomfort than cold medication.
Step-by-Step Injection Process
1. WASH HANDS
Thoroughly with soap and water, at least 20 seconds. Dry completely.
2. INSPECT MEDICATION
Should be clear, colorless, and free of particles. Don't use if cloudy or discolored.
3. CHOOSE INJECTION SITE
Options:
- Abdomen (2 inches from belly button) - most common
- Front of thigh
- Back of upper arm
Rotate sites weekly to prevent lipodystrophy.
4. CLEAN INJECTION SITE
Wipe with alcohol in circular motion. Allow to air dry completely (30+ seconds).
5. DRAW MEDICATION (IF USING VIAL)
Clean vial rubber stopper with alcohol. Draw prescribed dose into syringe. Tap to remove air bubbles.
6. INJECT
Pinch skin gently. Insert needle at 90-degree angle (45 degrees if very lean). Push plunger slowly and steadily. Hold for 10 seconds before withdrawing.
7. DISPOSE SAFELY
Place needle directly in sharps container. Never recap, bend, or throw in regular trash.
Weekly Injection Schedule
Semaglutide is a once-weekly injection. Choose the same day each week for consistency. If you miss a dose:
- Within 5 days: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember
- More than 5 days: Skip the missed dose and take your next dose on the regular day
- Never double up: Don't take two doses at once
Common Questions
Does it hurt?
Most people describe it as a mild pinch. The needles are very thin (30-31 gauge). After a few weeks, you'll barely notice.
What time of day is best?
There's no medical reason to prefer morning or evening. Many users choose evening so any initial nausea occurs during sleep.
Can I inject through clothing?
No. Always inject on clean, bare skin.
What if I see blood?
Minor bleeding is normal and harmless. Apply gentle pressure with a cotton ball.
